SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

GENERAL GUIDELINES

The Missouri Land Improvement Contractors Association (MLICA) awards one annual scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 each year to a full-time student attending Linn State Technical College who are pursuing a certificate or associates degree in the construction related trades of Construction & Civil Technology or Heavy Equipment Operations. Recipients will be chosen based on their interest in entering a construction-related trade upon completion of their coursework at Linn State Technical College.  Priority of selection is based upon an individual’s general aptitude and personal traits that are viewed conducive to success in the construction field. Recipients must be enrolled full-time starting the fall semester of the year in which the scholarship is awarded in order to remain eligible.

 Eligibility Requirements

  1. Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 hours minimum per semester).
  2. Applicant must be enrolled for the fall semester for the year in which the scholarship is awarded.
  3. Applicant must be a resident of Missouri.
  4. Applicant must be pursuing an associate of applied science degree or certificate in one of the following programs at Linn State Technical College:
    bulletConstruction & Civil Technology
    bulletHeavy Equipment Operations
  1. Applicant must be a student in good academic standing with a minimum 2.5 college or high school cumulative GPA. or GED with 260 minimum score.   
  2. Applicant must have the recommendation from a construction supervisor or technical course instructor.

 Selection and Award of Scholarship

A.   Selection Criteria. To be considered, applicants must forward a complete application packet, to include letters of recommendation, by the scholarship application deadline of May 1st.

B.   The criteria used to evaluate applications for award will be based 50% upon the results of the applicant’s interview, with the remaining 50% weighted equally based upon the following: 

s    Work history related to construction trades

s    Aptitude toward technical and construction related fields as demonstrated through academic achievement in related courses, vocational student organization involvement and skill competition results.

s    Ability to communicate clearly defined personal goals related to a career in the construction industry.

s   Recommendation of construction supervisor or technical instructor

C.   Priority for Selection. This is a one time, annual scholarship awarded to students who will be attending Linn State Technical College on a full-time basis. Alternates will be selected.  In the event a student is unable to fulfill the requirement of full-time enrollment for the fall semester in the year the scholarship is awarded, the scholarship will be awarded to the next available alternate.

D.    Scholarship Award. The scholarship provides $1,000, which is paid in two installments directly to the recipient’s account at Linn State Technical College upon the student’s verified enrollment.  The recipient will receive $500 in the fall semester and $500 in the spring semester after attendance at the annual MLICA Winter Convention (hosted in January).   The scholarship may be used for the cost of tuition, fees, books, tools, and/or other cost associated with a student’s education. 

E.   Prior year recipients may reapply for scholarship; however, priority will be given to first-time applicants.

 Application Procedures

Deadline for application to assure consideration for the next following academic year is May 1st.  Applicants must follow the procedures outlined below. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application as soon as the scholarship selection committee reaches a decision.

A.    Complete the Linn State Technical College Admissions Application.

B.    Forward a copy of your high school transcript or official GED score report.

C.    Take the ACT assessment test as early as possible and request that your scores be sent to Linn State Technical College, or take the COMPASS Test on the LSTC campus.

D.   Complete and return the signed Scholarship Application with three (3) letters of reference. Letters of reference should include the recommendation of a vocational/ technical teacher who has observed the applicant in a classroom or work setting. Be certain to complete the personal goal statement. An additional sheet can be used when writing the personal goal statement; however, this should not exceed one full page in length. Application should be forwarded to:

The applicant and appropriate school official(s) must sign the scholarship application. Scholarship consideration is also based on availability of funds. 

 Expectations of Scholarship Recipient

A.  Upon accepting the scholarship, the student agrees to remain enrolled on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 college credit hours), attend classes regularly, model appropriate behavior and maintain satisfactory academic standing. 

B.  Release of Information. In submitting application, the applicant or applicant’s legal guardian grants authority for release of information contained in the application packet for use by Linn State Technical College and MLICA in promoting or publicizing the scholarship. If selected, the recipient agrees to participate in ceremonies hosted to honor annual scholarship winners.

C.  Upon receiving the MLICA scholarship, the recipient agrees to attend one MLICA Winter Convention. (The Auxiliary will pay for one night’s lodging and banquet expense.) For more information regarding the MLICA meetings please contact the Executive Director:

If selected, the recipient agrees to send a thank-you letter to the scholarship sponsor. Thank you letters must be submitted to the Foundation Office at Linn State Technical College no later than one month after award is announced.

 To assure consideration, applications must be received by May 1st.
